Hey Ladies out there of all kinks and curls, I just wanna share my natural hair journey with you.
It all began in 2014 around February, when I did my last relaxer since, I really had no idea of what it was gonna turn out to be like, since I had never ever seen what my natural hair looked or felt like. From quite a young age I had wore my hair in a relaxed or permed state. So during the month of my last relaxer I actually became so eager to see what my texture was like and if my curls would be different to my sister's after seeing her natural hair. She did her last Big Chop in 2013 sometime at the end of the year and it had not been the first time that she had chopped her hair exposing her natural hair. I just never had the courage to do the same, ever...
In February of 2015 I decided that I was completely done relaxing my hair and started looking for an alternative way of going natural than the BC. So I came across a process called transitioning, which just means that I would keep my relaxed hair while my natural hair grew out under it until it was long enough to cut off, so that's exactly how my natural hair journey began.
My fair and only reason for not doing a BC is because I did not have the courage to where out my hair in a short or tini wini afro hairstyle, I was a ponytail kinda girl, and still am, so I couldn't see myself with short or TWA hair.
Although a transitioning might seem like the obvious choice for most but I can give you two disadvantages of why it probably isn't the best for most:
• Two different textures - when your natural hair starts to grow out, you experience the texture of your natural hair and that of the relaxed. Because these textures are not the same, it becomes very hard to blend them. Some naturals that have used the transitioning process tend to use lots of heat to straighten out their new growth to blend the textures.
• Product drowns out or is two heavy - when you are applying product to your transitioning hair you might not know how much to apply until your natural hair has grown out enough, this is because relaxed hair does not require a lot of product like natural hair. If you apply a little to compensate the relaxed hair then your natural hair will not be moisturised enough, and if you apply too much to compensate your natural roots then you relaxed hair will be too heavy for styling.
As I have journeyed through the transitioning process to become completely natural, those were the disadvantages I had experienced. But none-the-less I had got to a point where I was satisfied with the length my natural hair had grown out and decided to chop off all the relaxed hair. This was around about the 16 of October 2014, I was completely natural and have been since. Most of my transitioning process was most inspired by hair bloggers and vloggers on YouTube such as: Naptural85; Simplyounique; TheChicNatural; and AuCurlsNaturalle, just to name a few.
What I have learned through this journey more than anything is that, every women's natural hair is different, whether it be a friend, relative or natural hair guru and that you should never compare your natural hair. I have noticed that my sister's hair is actually completely different to mine, our curls don't match, textures don't match, and my hair is thin and hers is really thick. Also my hair has out grown hers, so everything about our hair is totally opposite.
I don't not have any regrets ever since I went natural, some people think it's a phase and I'm gonna eventually relax it, but naaah, I SAY NO TO THAT! I WON'T DRINK TO THAT!
