South African Celebrity naturals...

Favourite celeb naturals

Here is a little more inspiration for those of you out there that aren't yet part of the official natural trend. Since last year that 'Natural Look' has become a sudden trend for more celebrities here in South Africa and most ,non surprisingly, have been through that relaxed/chemical phase but are now 100% natural... Somebody say #Back2myroots.

These are just a few of the local celebrities that I so much adore*:

First and foremost, the resilient one of all Pearl Thusi.

We've seen this beautiful Mama in her natural essence and can't help but admire them curls.
Pearl is popularly known for her modeling career, signed to the model agency Models International, who also has been a great TV presenter on shows like Top billing,Club808 and also a radio host on Metro FM. An interview on Glamour magazine, Pearl gives us tips on how she keeps her hair on point, from styling tips to washing tips and even balance. Pearl's her is even bigger and better. #SaluteAfroSister

Next up is the elegant, Lira.

Lira jut can't be defined as anything else but natural. She has taken a real stand in embracing her true African beauty with her forever classic TWA hairstyle that has fast become her trade mark. Lira is a soul jazz singer, releasing single after single and album after album, well the woman is good at what she does and she's loved for it. And of course we love that hair girl! Lira has being through the relaxed stage of her life and is never going back, #SaluteAfroSister, speaking about it in an interview all about her natural hair journey.

The very cultured cultivating, Mmabatho Montsho.

Does she not have the face to represent a nation, African nation?! The natural roots of the ever talented actress(Generations, Rhythm City) and film director are very intriguing due to her very humbling personality which is consistently portrayed in her characters that she plays. As for Mmabatho's 'Fro seems to be growing very healthy and she is never afraid to wear it out and post pictures of it on instagram, even on set where she sometimes has it in cornrows. Be not afraid to work it. #SaluteAfroSister

One of the most inspiring black women among the rest, Lebo Mashile.

Lebo is a very poetic soul from this African country and known for her great wisdom through heart, soulful words. Most of her poems are about being a natural and bare African woman and the true beauty in it that well have suddenly failed to see. She is all natural, in her short but spectacular afro, and remains in spite of society measures. She is a true inspiration to many naturals and African woman. #SaluteAfroSister

Last but not the least, Phumeza Mbade.

In the very beginning, Phumeza has been a great inspiration due to the fact that she has been natural ever since I can remember. Her curly locs have been constantly in the eyes of the public as she has started out in her career as a model at a very young age and has also journeyed into music and dance. She is well known for hosting the TV show, My Perfect Wedding where we see her hair in the most dazzling styles ever. Phumeza's hair has grown to be a truly vibrant, and long Afro. I for one really adore her gorgeous hair. #SaluteAfroSister

Winter Hairdo - Rope braids/Kinky twists (Two methods)

So I've been recently wearing my new Hairdo on and I've gotten tons of compliments from friends and family and even followers. I know that the Rope braid is not a new hairstyle at all but I really felt that it was a perfect hairstyle for Winter.
I am generally the type of person who usually does my own hair, but since I've been doing both my sisters' hairs I decided that they should do mine, resulting in two different methods.
Although being really strict with my hair, as always, I have to give them the benefit of the doubt in making me look so beautiful.

So the hairstyle is pretty simple and it really doesn't take a long time because the braids are quite thick, so these are the things you will be needing.

*Wide tooth comb
*An afro pick
*Your products (oils, oil moisturisers, cremes, hairfoods)
*Hair ties/hair clips
*Synthetic hair - Darling:minimum 2 pkts (depending on length)

Preparation

To prep for this hairstyle I first applied my homemade deep conditioner to my hair in sections. I leave it in for an hour and a half then rinse. I then shampoo and condition as per normal then leave it to dry. Once my hair has air dried at least 30% I begin to apply my amla oil to my scalp (you can use any oil of your choice). Once I was done I left the rest to my sisters. Both my sisters were beginners to this hairstyle so the sections they did were not predetermined by experience...

The first method:

This method was performed throughout the back section of my head.
First my sister parted my hair into a medium to large section and applied Soft 'n Free Oil Moisturiser to the setion, combed it thoroughly, then parted it in two. The synthetic hair was not cut because I requested the length to be at waist length.
My sister placed the synthetic hair in line with my hair and began to twist the synthetic hair with mine.
One part of the section was twisted upwards and the other in the opposite direction or downwards.
Once each part is tightly twisted she crossed the parts and kept twisting them  together.
This method is shown in the image below.

 The second method:

This method was done in the very front section of my head.
First a medium to large section was parted off, then Soft 'n Free Oil Moisturiser was applied and combed thoroughly. My sister then plaited/braided my natural hair about an inch before taking the synthetic hair (length as requested) and rapping it once around the mini braid then she began to twist.
This method is one I have never come across, from any hair tutorials, before.
This method can be understood through the image below.

Result!

I really loved this hairdo and will definitely be doing it again.

Why would you wanna go natural?!

Hi ladies!

Beautiful afro hair, what ever happened to this classic style?

Well, it's back from the 70's. Lately there has been a few people wanting to know why would they want to decided to go natural and well my reason is not necessarily the best for you but since you want to know here are a few reasons that I've heard and read were stipulated by other naturals all over the world.

Let's get right into it!

1. Strength in the strands

Every really looked at your hair strand after combing through your hair and wondered whether it's shape was good? With natural hair the hair strands are much more thicker and stronger than with relaxed or permed hair. This is because your natural hair produces it's own oils and does not suffer any breakage (without the use of heat), whereas relaxed or perm hair is prone to breakage because of the chemicals that strip the hair of it's natural oils.

2. Natural Growth and Retention

When you start your hair journey there is always that doubt that you might never get your length back, but in actual fact when your hair is in it's natural state it grows much better than relaxed hair because there are no chemicals to weaken the hair strands. The hair will begin to grow much more thicker, faster , longer and stronger, with a good hair regime and the right hair products for your specific hair type.

3. Blind to your natural curl

Have you never ever seen that natural you, the you without the hair straightening chemicals? Then why not take a leap and dive right into the natural world of discovering the natural you. Many people have never seen their natural hair and find themselves curious as to what their hair would look like, this is like by for the most common reason that many naturals have decided to go natural, it's actually also my reason too. If your not too bold to just chop it all off with the BC then take it slow and transition. Learn more about these in my post My Natural Hair Journey.

4. Versatility

There's really nothing you can't do with your natural hair, it is the most versatile. Natural hair has no limitations of hairstyles that can be done, from updo's, cornrows, twist outs, braid outs, rod curls, the list is endless. Basically what I'm saying is your natural hair is easy to shape up and change from blow dried sleek straight hair to the bounciest curls ever! You will just never run out of styling options.

5. It's tons of fun

When people think of going natural they automatically think of the worse, but there isn't any real dangers of having natural afro or curly textured hair. It's a lot of fun learning how to handle your specific hair type, texture, and what types of products your hair will agree to (might even become a product junky, hehehe) and even experimenting with the many different styles possible for your hair, like puffs, curly 'fros, wash and go's and even accessories, like scarves and flowers.

These are just  my top 5 reasons why many naturals have decided to be natural. If you like you curious about the natural you, my advice is don't hesitate to take the leap and once you learn how to manage your hair, it will be worth it!

Be natural. Stay natural.
